    »Lights

    October 02, 2014 9:00 PM

Toronto-based singer/songwriter Lights Poxleitner has been able to straddle the line between mainstream and indie ever since first coming onto the scene in 2008 at the ripe age of 16. Though she initially wrote songs for other artists, label heads began taking notice and Lights soon found herself with a record deal. While her music primarily consists of slick synth-pop appropriate for any dance club or Top 40 radio slot, Lights' recent collaboration with the respected Canadian electronica act Holy Fuck has hardened up her sound a bit and added a refreshing dose of grit to her pop.

D.O.A. is a Canadian punk rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia, that is often referred to as one of the founders of hardcore punk. Formed in 1978 by ex-members of The Skulls, the band released its debut album,Something Better Change, with Friends Records in 1980, packed full of its signature leftist populist messages. The band's seminal sophomore LP, Hardcore '81, is credited with having coined the name of the hardcore punk movement that would follow. Despite a shifting lineup and an evolving music scene, D.O.A. maintains its dedicated fan base and continues to release new records into the 21st century, such as 2012's We Come In Peace.

Periphery is a progressive metal band from Washington, D.C. that's signature blend of polymetric grooves and soaring melodies continues to attract listeners who are looking for one of the moreinnovativeacts of the modern metal scene. With a nearexhaustivetouringschedule, Periphery has toured with the likes of DevilDriver, Animals as Leaders and The Dillinger Escape Plan, in addition to headlining its own shows. Having toured so much before releasing a proper LP helped solidify the band's sound, making the group's 2010 debut sound like a polished gem cranked out by some veteran band that has been together for decades.

    »The Wilderness Of Manitoba

    October 02, 2014 8:45 PM

While Toronto-based four-piece The Wilderness of Manitoba might not live in Manitoba, the group fittingly conjures up images of winter landscapes in barren surroundings and nights spent in a secluded log cabin around a fire. This imagery isn't actually too far from the truth, as the band members all reside in a fairly isolated house where they write and record their music late at night, when the house is cold and quiet. The results are acoustic folk arrangements full of layered harmonies that manage to be warm and desolate at the same time.
