Two Civil War battles took place on the Pritchard-Grim Farm just outside of Winchester, Virginia. The first battle in 1862 was also the first Civil War battle to be fought in the Shenandoah Valley, with Confederate General Stonewall Jackson's 3,000 troops combating Union General Kimball's force of 8,000-9,000 men. The Union troops eventually won the battle but it was ultimately a tactical victory for the Confederate army. The second battle, fought in 1864, was a decisive victory for the Confederate army, but its last victory in the valley, and was followed by the Great Burning of the Shenandoah Valley.
