Walnut Canyon National Monument
Winter - Nov to May - Mo to Su from 09:00 AM to 05:00 PM,Summer - Jun to Oct - Mo to Su from 08:00 AM to 05:00 PMIn Walnut Canyon, visitors can hike back geological eons along this part of the Colorado Plateau, where some rock exposes its age as almost two-billion years! To witness this magnificent geology, take the short, yet rugged trail which starts at the visitors center as it leads you to cliff dwellings that stand under the beautiful canyon walls. The dwellings are believed to have been constructed by pre-Colombian peoples, most notably the Sinagua (the name of the tribe is an ethnonym given in Spanish to connote 'without water'). For a more detailed and strenuous hike, visitors can go deeper into the canyon along the Island Trail, a breathtaking 85-foot descent into the heart of the community at this ancient site.
