»The Toasters With The Rudie Crew

    November 01, 2014 9:00 PM

Though dozens of members have been replaced or recycled, Robert Hingley has consistently held The Toasters down as one of the longest running Ska bands in North America (having lasted now over 25 years in the industry). The band tasted minor commercial success in the early 1990's, because the type of music they were creating (brass-heavy, ruckus-rousing ska) was quite popular at the time. Though the titles, lyrics and messages of their songs were far from G-Rated, they were still, ironically enough, featured in television commercials for products like Coca-Cola, AOL and even Nickelodeon programming for children.

    »The Tubes

    November 01, 2014 8:00 PM

Originally from Phoenix, AZ but formed in the San Francisco music scene of the early 1970s, The Tubes is a new wave band that skirted the line between cult pranksters and legitimate rock stars since. Led by the flamboyant Fee Waybill, the band often adopted a number of aliases onstage, complete with pun-based monikers and costumes. With minor radio hits such as the hard rock tune "White Punks on Dope" from its eponymous 1975 debut album, The Tubes proved it could write a successful songs despite (or perhaps because of) the tongue-in-cheek nature of its overall style. The band continued to release music into the 2000s, such as 2009's Mondo Birthmark.

    »Engelbert Humperdinck

    November 02, 2014 7:30 PM

Born Arnold Dorsey, UK crooner Engelbert Humperdinck knew early on that he wanted to be a musician, but had difficulty finding success after a decade of singing in night clubs. However, in the late 1960s, after changing his given name to that of the German composer, Humperdinck signed to Decca, which put out his single "Release Me," a track that topped the charts in the US and UK, impressively preventing the Beatles song "Strawberry Fields Forever" from ever obtaining the number one slot in the band's native country. With his smoothly sung lyrics about love and his charming good looks, the singer was bestowed with the nickname "King of Romance," and to this day continues to perform to smitten fans around the world.
