The Akron Symphony Orchestra, formed in Akron, Ohio, is known locally and throughout the world for providing concerts and guest performances of the highest caliber. The orchestra was founded in 1949 by Mabel Lamborn Graham, who then spent the next several years diligently fundraising for its grand opening. Since opening with its first season in 1952, the Akron Symphony Orchestra has since grown to become one of Ohio's greatest symphony orchestras, as well as a tremendous educational resource for youth in the city of Akron. As of 2006, the Akron Symphony Orchestra has been under the direction of Christopher Wilkins, and continues to provide audiences of all ages with a unique cultural experience.
The Youngstown State Penguins represents the athletic programs and
intercollegiate teams of Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. An NCAA Division I member, the university competes in the Horizon League and the Missouri Valley Football Conference. The university also fields a men's ice hockey team, which is a member of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. Youngstown maintains a strong track and field program, with the women's squad winning multiple Horizon League championships over the years. Other men's and women's programs sponsored by the school include basketball, football, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, baseball and golf teams.
