»Desert of Maine

When you think of Maine, you imagine salty ocean breezes, beaches and perhaps buttered lobster rolls, which is why this 'desert,' just a short distance from the city of Freeport is so unique. Formed over thousands of years by glacial erosion, the 40 acre (16.18 hectares) stretch of shifting sand dunes offers plenty of fun activities for the entire family. Opened as a tourist attraction in 1925, the sand dunes were originally hidden under foliage and greenery, uncovered by soil erosion and farming over the years on the privately owned Tuttle Farm. Oddly contrasting with the dense forested land surrounding the site, tram or trolley cart tours provide the perfect opportunity to discover the wonders and natural habitat of the dunes. Those who enjoy a hike can make a day trip and explore the trails and hiking paths on foot. Children will especially enjoy activities like sand painting, crafts, gem stone mining, fossil hunting, butterfly observation and exploring the original Tuttle farm.
