Located on 50 acres (20.23 hectares), the reserve is home or plays host to a variety of different birds, many of which are rare. There is a visitors center and boardwalk with informative displays to educate visitors. The trails are free and open to the public every day of the year.

    »Whaling Wall

    If you have ever seen a large mural on the side of a building, chances are it was done by Wyland, a man who has devoted himself to painted 100 walls featuring whales over the course of his lifetime. Aimed at highlighting the importance of marine life, the Whaling Wall on South Padre Island is the only one in Texas. This is his 53rd mural on the subject, specifically depicts orca whales and is beloved by the locals.

    »Port Isabel Lighthouse State Historic Site

    Located on the Texan coast and is open to the public, the lighthouse at Port Isabel was constructed in 1852 at the request of sailors who had trouble navigating the shoreline. The viewing area of the lighthouse is 50 feet (15 meters) above ground affording beautiful views of the area and South Padre Island. The surrounding park also has beautiful grass and picnic tables as well as the headquarters of the Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce in a replica of the lighthouse keeper's cottage.     »UFO Beach

    Located in the Northern stretch of the South Padre Island National Seashore, the UFO Beach is a nude beach that is known for its golden sands and beach parties. A hard-to-miss buoy, decorated in lurid colors and shingles demarcates this area. The shallow beach is a great spot for sun-bathing.

    »Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge

    With over 65,000 acres of land (263 square kilometers), the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge provides a safe haven for much of the flora and fauna of the southern Texas area. The park is open to visitors from dawn until dusk, and in fact it is at the very beginning and end of the day which is the best time for seeing large animals. A number of birds also make their home in the park. In terms of human activity, hiking, biking, and driving through the park are all permitted, as is fishing and hunting white-tailed deer when the appropriate rules are followed. Experience nature as it was meant to be seen at the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge.

    »Palo Alto Battlefield

    The Palo Alto Battlefield is where the first battle of the Mexican-American War took place on May 8, 1846. At the site are exhibits and an orientation video to better understand the causes and consequences of the war between these two great nations. From the parking lot to the overlook of the battlefield is a walk of about a half mile (0.8 kilometers), although those with special needs may use a separate road. Activities occur throughout the year, check the website for details.
