    »WWE: Smackdown

    September 23, 2014 7:00 PM

During the early 20th century wresting was looked at as a serious sport with classical connections to Olympic competitions. This all changed, though, with the rise of World Wrestling Entertainment during the 80s. Rising to prominence under the guidance of CEO Vince McMahon, WWE presented wrestling as less of a sport and more of a staged entertainment event with colorful characters and elaborately planned title matches. Battles between WWE wrestlers are typically held in stadiums, packed with fervent fans, and are televised to audiences around the country. Theatrics and even pyrotechnics are employed to an ostentatious degree but all the lively visuals combine to make for some extremely engaging, exaggerated wrestling performances that fans continue to thrive on.

    September 26, 2014 7:00 AM

Combining the sounds of death metal and black metal, Goatwhore is a blackened death metal band that formed in 1997 in New Orleans. After the disbandment of his former band Acid Bath, singer/songwriter and guitarist Sammy Duet joined vocalist L. Ben Falgoust, guitarist Ben Stout, bassist Patrick Bruders and drummer Zak Nolan to record Goatwhore's 2000 debut album, The Eclipse of Ages into Black. On its follow up album Funeral Dirge for the Rotting Sunk, released in 2003, the band turned to darker material, examining the disturbing aspects of human nature with a sludge metal sound. Goatwhore released its fifth studio album Blood for the Master, in 2012.

    »Poliça

    October 02, 2014 9:00 PM

Poliça is the musical project led by former Roma di Luna singer Channy Casselle, who joined Vampire Hands bassist Chris Bierden and drummers Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson in 2011. With Ryan Olson as producer, Poliça creates a sound reminiscent of Gayngs, another one of Olson's musical endeavors, complete with hypnotic auto-tuned vocals and melodic bass lines. The group isn't just a spinoff of the Gayngs, essentially a super-group of musicians who split the vocal performances equally. Casselle is the natural anchor of Poliça. Her distinctive voice is almost too endearing to be auto-tuned, but she uses it more as an instrument, playing and matching guitar rhythms and drum beats. Poliça played its fourth show as a band in front of a sold out crowd at the Bowery Ballroom in New York, quickly generating a fan base and a fair amount of attention for its 2012 debut album, Give You the Ghost.
