State Of The State's Environment: What's Carbon Got To Do With It?
University of Puget SoundApril 01, 2015 6:00 PM
1500 North Warner Street
Tacoma, WA 98416
Issues regarding our environment are all related. The drought conditions that Governor Inslee just declared, the potential price increases with PSE because of a lack of rain and the resulting lack of hydroelectric power, the increased rates of asthma associated with air pollution and the primary producer of air pollution is transportation hence the Inslee proposed gas taxes.   BUT, what part does CARBON play in all of this? We know that you will be surprised.   Join our panel of experts and you will come out of this dinner program with a far more comprehensive view of what really ails our environment and what we can all do to improve it for now, and for future generations.    Our panelists are:   Renee Klein-President & CEO of the American Lung Association - Mountain Pacific, overseeing the 7-state region of Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming.  She has held this role since July 2010. The American Lung Association is the nation's leading organization working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through education, advocacy and research. The ALA Mountain Pacific region is a $6 million organization with approximately 35 employees who direct tobacco, lung health and clean air initiatives. Previously she served as Executive Director for Highline Medical Center Foundation, was founding partner of Klein & Klein Communications & Marketing, and worked for major companies on both the East and West coasts.  She has considerable government relations experience and has been responsible for public affairs in many of her positions. Klein was born in Alaska and grew up there her early years, after which she lived in Europe and Washington D.C., where she earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Maryland.  She subsequently worked and traveled throughout the U.S. and abroad, returning in 1998 to live in the Northwest. She is a Trustee of the Aquarium of the Pacific and on the Steering Committee for Washington's Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy. In 2014 she served on Washington Governor Jay Inslee's Carbon Emissions Reduction Task Force.   Todd Myers is Director of WPC's Center for the Environment. He is one of the nation's leading experts on free-market environmental policy. Todd is the author of the landmark 2011 book Eco-Fads: How the Rise of Trendy Environmentalism Is Harming the Environment and is designated a Wall Street Journal Expert panelist for energy and the environment. He has authored numerous studies on environmental issues, including Five Years of Environmental Policy: Are We Making a Difference; Promoting Personal Choice, Incentives and Investment to Cut Greenhouse Gases, and more. Todd's in-depth research on the failure of the state's 2005 "green" building mandate continues to receive national attention. He formerly served on the executive team at the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, and was Director of Public Relations for the Seattle SuperSonics and Director of Public Affairs for the Seattle Mariners. Todd holds a Master's degree from the University of Washington.
