This center celebrates Kalamazoo's history as a celery farming center through its many tours, museums, and exhibits. Included are a turn-of-the-century schoolhouse, a 1930's grain elevator, the Hayloft Theatre, and the 1846 Stuart Mansion.
The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts or KIA as it is lovingly called is a rich resource for arts, and known to rope in some of the best traveling exhibitions in the state. Their permanent painting collection is not too bad either. Educational programs are always on for adults, kids, families and teenagers who can enjoy the classes and walks. This outstanding interactive museum offers a large array of hands-on science, history, and technology exhibits. Features include an Interactive Learning Hall, Challenger Learning Center, the Mercantile gift store, and a planetarium. The museum is open daily.
Established in 1977, the Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum, also called the Air Zoo, is located on Portage Road in near Downtown Portage. Displaying an eclectic collection of rare and antique aircrafts that includes a space simulator, the museum is also home to the biggest indoor, hand painted mural in the world. Just a few miles away from the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek International Airport, it also features a canteen and a gift shop. There are also many flight simulators on the offer.
Designed by Dr. Roger Pecina, a retired dentist, as a part of his dream of increasing tourism in Cassopolis, the Sinclair Gas Station Museum features almost all artifacts from the iconic gas station of the '50s. Including objects like an original Life magazine sporting a cover of Dr. Martin Luther King, a period radio, stamps and many more, the museum makes for an interesting visit. The only reproduced objects in the museum are a Garage sign that says, “Since 1952” and a personalized can. Dr. Pecina is the founder of Mahogany Outfitters and has also designed the Hardway Garage, a gallery for vintage boats and cars.
Located within a 1906 building that used to be the county jail and the Sheriff's house, is the Allegan Old Jail Museum. Highlighting the history of the town and giving interesting insights into jail conditions in the '60s, the museum displays over 10,000 artifacts. Apart from this, the museum also displays diorama of various businesses that thrived here way back then. Open to public on Saturdays from 10a to 1p, the museum makes for an interesting visit.
Michigan Maritime Museum has been established with the aim of protecting and maintaining the lakes and other water bodies in the city. The museum houses collectibles and other maritime articles or even remnants from ships that are wonderful to look at.
