Nga Manu means 'the birds' in the Maori language and this tranquil section of privately owned wetland and reserve is the ideal spot in which to view many of New Zealand's endangered native birds in their own environment. A major attraction is the nocturnal kiwi house and the reserve is also participates in a tuatara breeding programme. Several kilometers of walkways traverse the park and a lookout tower affords marvelous views over the surrounding countryside.
Located by the banks of the Whanganui River, the Ohorere Gardens are a serene respite for those who love to end their tiresome day with walks and strolls amidst the greens. The gardens also serves as a wedding and reception venue at times.
Experience life on the farm without having to put on your gumboots. The Lindale Centre takes you away from the maddening cowds of the city and safe into the arms of Mother Nature herself. Take a guided walk over the Lindale Farm, or catch a show where the sheep are sheared and you can try your hand at milking a cow. Kids can feed baby animals (at the right time of year). Get a real taste of New Zealand with cheeses, wines and ice cream, and view tasteful exhibits in the on site gallery.
A short drive north of the city you will find Staglands, a wildlife reserve set in the beautiful Akatarawa Valley. Animals of all types can be found in a setting as close as possible to their natural surroundings. Walk amongst the birds in the walk-through aviaries, get as close as you would like to a kune kune pig (even her babies are cute) and feed the animals.
