Nestled along the banks of the Marais des Cygnes River, the city of Ottawa was named after the Native Ottawa tribe who lived here in the 17th century. The Appanoose Area Museum is a good place to visit for a lowdown on ancient tribes, their customs and artifacts that have been preserved and showcased so beautifully. The 1859-built Dietrich Cabin is an ode to a brave couple who defended the area during times of war and destruction. Present day Ottawa is a lovely laid back place where foodies can indulge in a host of culinary specialties with the BBQ joints, taverns, coffee houses, Mexican, Chinese and world cuisine options that line the downtown area.

Gardner was established in 1857 as a Free Stater Settlement, and was mostly inhabited by starry-eyed immigrants from Massachusetts whose Governor Henry Gardner may have been the reason behind the city being named Gardner. The Gardner Historical Museum pays a fitting tribute to the legacy of the sons and daughters of the soil who contributed in some way or another to the building of the United States. Present day Gardner is a lovely city that celebrates events like the Daddy-Daughter Ball, July 4th Celebrations, Prairie Punisher Duathlon, Snow Sculpture Contest and the Halloween Boo Bash perennially.
