»Hegeler Carus Mansion

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this 57 room Victorian mansion, is open on Wednesday through Sunday afternoons, for one hour tours. The seven-level mansion has 16,000-square-feet and features a mansard roof; dormer windows; molded cornices; decorative brackets; and a tower crowned by a 30-foot cupola. Although faded, the interior of the mansion is virtually unchanged, since the 19th century, with the original decor. Among the highlights is the mansion's two-story gymnasium, which spans the basement and ground levels.

»Farnsworth House

The celebrated Farnsworth House acts as a fine example of modernist domestic architecture. It was constructed between 1945 and 1951. The house spans over a 60-acre (24-hectare) estate in close proximity to the Fox River that flows through the south of Plano City, Illinois. It is basically a one-room weekend retreat and predominantly a glass and steel structure. The finely-created 1500 square-foot (139 square-meter) house is broadly accepted as a masterpiece defining International Style of architecture.
