One hundred years ago, American teachers established the English-speaking public school system of the Philippines. Now, in a striking turnabout, American schools are recruiting Filipino teachers. The Learning is the story of four Filipina women who reluctantly leave their families and schools to teach in Baltimore. With their increased salaries, they hope to transform their families lives back in their impoverished country. But the women also bring idealistic visions of the teachers craft and of life in America, which soon collide with Baltimores tough realities.  While I was born and raised in the Philippines, Ive lived my entire adult life in the U.S.  Im both an insider and an outsider, which allows me to have a distinct point of view, says filmmaker Ramona Diaz. »Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra: Early Explorers - Orchestra Abc's

February 12, 2015 10:00 AM

Based in New Orleans, The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1991 and remains the only full-time professional orchestra in the Gulf South. Led by Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto, the company offers a 36 week concert season that includes a variety of classical pieces, contemporary compositions and casual classics as well as family, education and outreach concerts. Since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the members were forced to perform at a different location due to the flooding of its longtime base, the Orpheum Theater. Nevertheless, the orchestra had continued to move forward, raising awareness of the disaster and using it to fuel its contemporary classical sound.

»Penguin Feedings

March 09, 2015 10:30 AM

The Academy's African Penguins live in a fascinating social colony. These relationships-who is mating with whom, arranged marriages and family squabbles-are always especially apparent during meal time. Watch the birds dip and dive, strut and show off in their tank at the end of African Hall as a biologist dons a wet suit and hands out vitamin-stuffed herring and capelin.
