Olathe, Kansas was named so in 1857 when Dr. John T. Barton discovered the land and found it so beautiful, he decided to ask a Shawnee tribe member for the local interpretation of the word to which he replied 'Olathe!' The city is emblematic of Midwestern hospitality. Gardner was established in 1857 as a Free Stater Settlement, and was mostly inhabited by starry-eyed immigrants from Massachusetts whose Governor Henry Gardner may have been the reason behind the city being named Gardner. The Gardner Historical Museum pays a fitting tribute to the legacy of the sons and daughters of the soil who contributed in some way or another to the building of the United States. Present day Gardner is a lovely city that celebrates events like the Daddy-Daughter Ball, July 4th Celebrations, Prairie Punisher Duathlon, Snow Sculpture Contest and the Halloween Boo Bash perennially.
