The Actors Temple was established in 1917 by the shopkeepers of Hell's Kitchen but grew in popularity with the Jewish actors community of Broadway. The Judaic worship center is located in a three-story building with several studios which can be rented for shows, auditions, rehearsals and functions. The synagogue has innovative programs like 'Storahtelling', Jewish Rock and many other modern Jewish adaptations. There are Shabbat services on Friday nights and Saturday mornings as well as prayer services on all Jewish holidays.
If the soaring price of Broadway tickets starts to take a toll on your budget, never fear the TKTS Booth is nearby. Established by the Theater Development Fund in 1973, TKTS offers dozens of tickets for Broadway and off-Broadway at half or three-quarters price on the day of the performance. The more popular shows tend to move fast, so arrive as early as you can before the booth opens. Cash and traveler's checks only.
St. Clement's Episcopal Church was founded in 1830 to care for the Christian community of Manhattan district. Later, in 1962, the church building was renovated to include a theater, that went on to become a popular venue to host masses, plays, recitals, etc. The congregation believes in serving the people, irrespective of their caste, creed or color. They also have a food pantry that serves food to over 500 people every week and a vet clinic to care for pet animals.
This imposing and elegant Episcopalian Church, which is one of the city's finest examples of neo-gothic architecture, contrasts wildly with the nearby garishness of the Times Square area. Built in 1895, the solemn and ornate interior serves as an oasis amid Midtown's hustle and bustle. There are no official tours, but there is usually someone willing to show you around following Sunday Mass.
