Born in South Carolina, Trevor Hall is a singer/songwriter who discovered his affinity for music at age 11 with the help of his musician father, who bought him his first guitar and encouraged him to write songs. Within a few years Hall had written enough material for an album, and he recorded his debut, Lace Up Your Shoes, during a studio session gifted to him by his father on his fifteenth birthday. After Vanguard Records signed him in 2009, Hall released his fourth studio album, a self-titled effort that debuted on the Billboard 200 Album chart as well as the Heatseeker's chart.

One of the most memorable songwriters contributing to modern independent music, Conor Oberst is multi-instrumentalist and vocalist best known as the front man of indie rock band Bright Eyes. Before providing a voice to his many projects, he self-recorded his debut album Water on a cassette tape in 1993 at the age of 13 with what would become his and his brother's independent label, Saddle Creek Records. Oberst spent the mid 1990s playing in bands such as Commander Venus, The Faint, and Park Ave. while also starting a solo project called Bright Eyes, which quickly evolved into a melting pot of different musicians revolving around a core trio of Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott. He would go on to release eight Bright Eyes albums within the next decade, starting with 1998's A Collection of Songs Written and Recorded 1995-1997, while extending his reach to more musical endeavors including Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band and Monsters of Folk, which were born in 2007 and 2009 respectively. Acting the primary songwriter for most of his projects and somehow finding time to consistently release solo material including 2009's Outer South, Oberst was unsurprisingly named the best songwriter by Rolling Stone in 2008 and is well on his way to becoming one of indie rock music's most iconic artists.

DJ Shadow (aka Joshua P. Davis) began his music career as a disc jockey for the University of California, Davis campus radio station KDVS. During his time at the radio station, he amassed a significant amount of eclectic records and began to delve into the esoteric world of music sampling. DJ Shadow's first full length release, 1996's Endtroducing..., was comprised entirely of sampled material from other albums. While it might seem unoriginal to take parts of other musicians work, DJ Shadow manipulates the sounds and pits samples against one another to create a myriad collection of tones that manage to complement one another.
