»Old Burying Grounds

Old Burying Grounds was established in 1709 and is surrounded by magnificent oak trees, giving it an ethereal look that is eerie yet fascinating. Owned by the Town of Beaufort, it is maintained and operated by the Beaufort Historical Association. Guided tours are available during summers. Interesting stories surround many graves such as of the little girl who was buried in a rum cask because she died on a ship while returning from England or Captain Otway Burns, a war hero whose tomb is covered with a cannon from his ship, the Snap Dragon. It is also the resting place of many Confederate and Union soldiers. Some of the crypts are marked with wood, shells and bricks.

»Cape Lookout Lighthouse

The lighthouse located at the Cape Lookout is approximately 163 feet (49 meters) high, and was fully functional by 1950. It is used to help sea vessels and boats spot the shore in the darkness of the night. It flashes light every 15 seconds and is so powerful that it can be visible from about 19 miles (30 kilometers) off shore. This landmark is a rare lighthouse considering the fact that it flashes and operates even in the day time.
