»Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village

The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is the state's only archaeological site that is accessible to the general public. A Native American village is believed to have existed at the site some 1,100 years ago. Based upon archaeological evidence and the village's well-thought out location by the river, researchers have surmised that the village was once home to a small, yet thriving agricultural community. However, there is still much that remains unknown about the village itself and the people who called it home. Excavations and research continue to be carried out at the site, and can be observed at the archeodome. Visitors can also tour the Boehnen Memorial Museum which boasts a reconstructed replica of the kind of dwellings that constituted the village, alongside the numerous artifacts that were uncovered through the process of excavation. Offering a rare insight into the lives of some of the region's first settlers and the inner working of an active archaeological site, the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is a haven for history buffs of every age. Opening hours vary throughout the year, and the site is only open by appointment during the winter months, so make sure to plan ahead!Boehnen Memorial Museum
