Established in 1984, Virginia Museum of Natural History is since educating people of all ages about various aspects of nature. The museum is home to more than 22 million objects including some award-winning exhibits. The museum has a wide array of items displaying the evolution of various types dinosaurs and their remains. Apart from a wide array of permanent exhibits including The Harvest Foundation of the Piedmont Great Hall, How Nature Works, Fossil Overlook, the museum also showcases several temporary exhibits. A museum partner of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, this arts association offers a varied performing arts series, as well as state-of-the-art gallery displays exhibiting local, regional, and international artists. They also offer lectures, classes, and musical recitals.
Changing gallery exhibits highlighting the folk music, crafts, customs, and material culture of the Blue Ridge Region and Virginia are featured at this unique museum that also contains a re-created 1800 farmstead illustrating a German-American settlement, as well as special hands-on programming, folklife related events, and a gift shop that contains traditional Blue Ridge craft items.
