On April 9, 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at this site. Grant's army had successfully cut off the exhausted and much smaller southern troops. The two generals met at McLean House and the surrender was documented ending four years of battle between the north and the south. The park contains several buildings and historic sites significant to this monumental event on 1,700 acres. Cars are not allowed in the village, but walking tour maps are available at the Visitor Center. Appomattox Court House is about 90 miles from Richmond.
