Eliza Gilkyson is a folk musician from Austin, Texas who has become somewhat of a music legend in her home state. Daughter of folk singer/songwriter Terry Gilkyson, who has composed many songs for Disney films during the 1960s, Eliza would begin her long musical career at the age of 19 with the release of her first album, Eliza '69 in 1969. Gilkyson was inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame in 2003, and her breakthrough album, Land of Milk and Honey, was released the following year to widespread critical acclaim in addition to a Grammy nod for that year.

The Used is an American post-hardcore band from Orem, Utah. Band members Quinn Allman, Jepharee Howard and Branden Steineckert formed a band in 1997, but needed a singer for it. After auditioning 50 singers, Bert McCracken was chosen. In 2000, with a new singer, band members renamed the group to The Used. The newly re-dubbed band released its self-titled debut in 2002, and a handful more scream-punk albums since then.

Loosely based on real events, Memphis tells the love story of a white disc jockey named Huey Calhoun and a black singer named Felicia Farrell. Set in a segregated America in the 1950s, the musical comments on the politics of the era as the couple fights to stay together. Although Memphis debuted on Broadway in 2009, the show made its premiere in 2002 at the New Works Festival in California and was produced in theaters across the country before finally making its way to New York.
