Taos, New Mexico has attracted many artists with its beauty and mixture of Tao Pueblo Indian and Hispanic culture. Out of this mixture, the first art colony in the American West arose. Local Taos artists Joseph Henry Sharp, Bert Geer Phillips, Oscar E. Berninghaus, W. Herbert Dunton, E. Irving Couse and Ernest Blumenschein formed this society to be able to market their paintings in the East as well as locally.
