Based in New Orleans, The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1991 and remains the only full-time professional orchestra in the Gulf South. Led by Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto, the company offers a 36 week concert season that includes a variety of classical pieces, contemporary compositions and casual classics as well as family, education and outreach concerts. Since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the members were forced to perform at a different location due to the flooding of its longtime base, the Orpheum Theater. Nevertheless, the orchestra had continued to move forward, raising awareness of the disaster and using it to fuel its contemporary classical sound.
The huge oak trees along a two-mile strip of New Orleans' historic City Park are loaded with more than two million twinkling lights and ornaments to celebrate the season. A driving tour is offered each day, along with amusement rides, snacks and live entertainment. This fun-filled family event takes place from late November through early January each year.
