As the band started playing around the city, they started to attract a fairly respectable following. When the indie, garage rock outfit was asked to play the Pop Montreal festival, they thought they were going to be picked up by a record company and signed on the spot. But It was not to be, the band played the festival but didn't get a recording contract. The band preserved though and managed to land a record deal with more and more touring.

    »Rusko

    November 14, 2014 7:00 PM

One of the more prominent electronic genres to emerge out of England in the late '90s was dubstep. Though the genre sounds nothing like dub reggae, the warble friendly form of electronic dance music found a wide listener base and swarms of eager dance crazed youths intent on moving to the infections music. As dubstep progressed into the 2000s several electronic composers, like English born Rusko, started to do innovative things with the genre's characteristic sound and progressed the style of music towards new heights. As Rusko and his contemporaries continue to do cool new things, its interesting to watch these musicians do ground breaking achievements with each new sonic endeavor of theirs.

»Devin Townsend, Animals As Leaders, Monuments

    November 19, 2014 8:00 PM

Devin Townsend is a multi-instrumentalist and producer known for both his solo career and his work with the group Strapping Young Lad and The Devin Townsend Band. Townsend's first experience in the music industry came when he was asked to contribute lead vocals on Steve Vai's 1993 album, Sex & Religion. After touring with Vai, he found himself discouraged and angry with the music business and used his negative emotions to make his first solo album Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing, the following year under the name Strapping Young Lad. He formed a band to back up his vocals and together they released Strapping Young Lad's critically acclaimed album City, in 1997. Townsend started his own label called HevyDevy Records, through which he released most of his solo work, and in 2007, he broke up Strapping Young Lad and the short-lived Devin Townsend Band to spend more time with his wife and children. In 2009, he began working on his album series The Devin Townsend Project, which features four albums recorded and written with different styles. He released Ki and Addicted in 2009, followed by North American and Australian tours, and Deconstruction and Ghost in 2011. the Devin Townsend Project showcased Townsend's production style with layered tracks and vocals that ranged from classical ballads to raw screams.

    »Lights

    November 21, 2014 8:00 PM

Toronto-based singer/songwriter Lights Poxleitner has been able to straddle the line between mainstream and indie ever since first coming onto the scene in 2008 at the ripe age of 16. Though she initially wrote songs for other artists, label heads began taking notice and Lights soon found herself with a record deal. While her music primarily consists of slick synth-pop appropriate for any dance club or Top 40 radio slot, Lights' recent collaboration with the respected Canadian electronica act Holy Fuck has hardened up her sound a bit and added a refreshing dose of grit to her pop.
