Mancelona was founded in 1872 when a railroad station was built which culminated to the building of the town. A number of factories opened thus attracting migrant workers. This city is known for the annual buck hunting contest where deer are hunted in large numbers.
Part of Michigan's Antrim County, Elk Rapids has made a conscious effort to preserve its old-world charm by refusing to let retail chains set up shop in the old main street area. Capitalizing on its area by the Elk Lake and Traverse Bay, this scenic city attracts visitors in plenty.
