»Yo-yo Ma

December 03, 2014 7:30 PM

Some musicians are so closely linked to their instruments that it seems like one wouldn't exist without the other. For the better part of his life, Yo-Yo Ma has become defined by the instrument he plays: the cello. He was born in Paris to a mother who was a singer and a father who was a music professor. Picking up music at an early age, Ma quickly became an adept cellists - performing to audiences at the ripe old age of five and playing for then President John F. Kennedy when he was seven. Later he would study at the famed Julliard School of Music before deciding to enroll at Harvard University. While studying music at these various instutions, Ma fell in love with classical arrangements but also with modern compositions - resulting in a unique take on music that blends old world sounds with modern tones. Ma is widely considered to be one of the most revered cellists of the 20th and 21st centuries.

»Leann Rimes

December 16, 2014 7:00 PM

Leann Rimes has been in the limelight for nearly the entirety of her life. The Jackson, Mississippi native began taking singing lessons at the age of two and shortly thereafter performed in local talent shows, eventually working her way up to singing the national anthem at Dallas Cowboys football games by the age of 9. After nearly being cast in a Broadway rendition of Annie, the young songstress decided to stray from musical theater and focus on a singing career. With her father as her manager, Rimes finally caught the ear of songwriter and DJ Bill Mack, who decided Rimes should sing his song "Blue," which he'd originally written for Patsy Cline before she was killed in a plane crash. This single proved to be the catalyst for Rimes, and at the age of 13 she became the youngest artist to ever win a Country Music Association award. Rimes continued to release album after album of country pop backed by her powerful vocals, never failing to impress fans. While the singer has been surrounded by her fair share of scandal, she continues to maintain an impressively successful career that shows no sign of slowing anytime soon.

»The King's Singers

December 19, 2014 7:30 PM

A cappella groups have a tendency to be overtly gimmicky. With no instruments and only vocal prowess to bolster its music, an a cappella group rarely amounts to much and is typically called upon to be the shtick of some party or get together when all the members of the band dress in ridiculous clothing and sing barbershop quartet style tunes. In an attempt to sway the public's opinion about a cappella groups, The King's Singers present an extremely diverse song catalog that pulls just as heavily from old classical opera music as from modern top 40 hits. The band was founded in England in 1968 and is one of the world's oldest a cappella groups still in existence.
