Clayton County International Park, located 20 minutes to the south of Atlanta, was constructed for the beach volleyball competition of the 1996 Olympic Games, and now serves as one of Atlanta's most complete water parks. In addition to a 6200 capacity volleyball stadium and 13 courts, the park offers a beach on its six-acre (2.5 hectare) lake, several water slides, and a pool for small children. Miniature golf, basketball, softball, hiking and fishing are also offered. Check the website for varying schedule of operations.
Lake Spivey is just a short drive from downtown and offers great golf at a reasonable price. The club has well-maintained golf courses that offer challenges to a professional as well as amateurs. The club has a driving range and fully stocked pro shop. After a tiring game, one can retire with a sumptuous meal served in their restaurant.
Located 30 minutes southwest of the city, this amusement park is open on weekends. Although there's plenty of fun for adults, the park is geared toward kids, with bumper boats, batting cages, laser tag, and three go-cart tracks. A miniature golf course, video arcade, and play maze are also available. Bulk tickets can be purchased 200 at a time since they are the cheapest. There are also occasional "armband specials" that offer unlimited access to certain rides for a certain price.
This farm is not far from downtown Atlanta, and offers a sweet retreat from city life. Trail rides, picnics, and many other activities are offered on this 100-acre (40-hectare) estate, which features both farmland and woodlands. Perhaps the most popular events are the moonlight hayrides, offered nightly throughout the year in fair weather. Business retreats, office picnics, and private events can all be organised, and 15 acres (six hectares) can be for camping.
One of the nicer public layouts in the city, Browns Mill is a diamond in the rough of south Atlanta. The course has four lakes, generous greens and is always well maintained. Watch out for the tough twelfth hole. Tee-times accepted up to one week in advance. Features such as Club house, driving range, golf carts, instruction, junior programs, league tournaments, locker rooms, pro on site, pro shop, putting/chipping, rental clubs, snack bar, training facilities, are included here.
College Park is a great course for beginners. Just a short hop from Hartsfield International Airport, it boasts a 9-hole, par 36 layout with challenging greens. Rental Clubs are available. Reserved tee times are not given. There are discounts in green fees for residents, students and seniors (55+). It hosts several golf tournaments and private events like weddings. The 18-hole course at the Links Club offers a challenging round of golf on a course designed to resemble the coastal links of the British Isles. The fairways are hilly and undulating, and the greens are surprisingly quick. Water comes into play on several of the holes in the form of strategically-placed ponds.
Sugar Creek Golf & Tennis Center has long been known for its fast greens and well-kept fairways. Recent work has changed a couple of holes and made the course even tougher. It hosts several tournaments and corporate events. Visit website for more information.
A little park located not far from the city center, Welcome All offer exciting recreational facilities. Besides the lush park expanse, that is ideal for family picnics, the park also offers extensive sports facilities including a football field, five baseball fields, a basketball court, tennis courts as well as a general playground. Apart from these, the park also has indoor facilities like a swimming pool, an equipped fitness center as well as a rental space capable of hosting numerous events. Check website for more.
This pleasant 18-hole, par 72 course is popular with mid-level players, and sits on the site of a Civil War battle. One of the area's most frequented public courses, weekends can get pretty busy, so reserved tee times are strongly recommended. The golf course is open daily from 7a.
Just minutes from downtown Atlanta in historic Grant Park, the exciting Zoo Atlanta features the Southeast's most impressive collection of wildlife from around the globe. Legend says that the zoo got its start when the owners of a traveling animal show went bankrupt and suddenly fled town. Today, popular exhibits include daily elephant demonstrations, giraffe feedings, and the acquired Chinese pandas. Various spots within the zoo make for wonderful locations to host private celebrations.
This urban recreation center brings outdoor fun to the southeast side neighborhood of Little Five Points. In addition to a swimming pool (open during summer months only), the park features tennis courts, basketball courts, softball and soccer fields, a children's playground and a large picnic pavilion. The 48-acre (20-hectare) expanse has extensive paved pathways for biking and in-line skating, plus public restrooms and a specially designated pet area. Take the Flat Shoals Road exit off Interstate 20 and head north. Turn right on 2nd Avenue, then right again on Tilson Road to reach here.
