Telfer Park is a convention center, a skate park and a sports facility all rolled into one. The park sees quite a number of public gatherings and events. Entry into the park and the use of skating facilities is free for the public.
Situated in Sunset Park, the Elkhorn Band Shell is a popular outdoor entertainment venue. The picturesque shell was built in 1926 and its design draws inspiration from another shell located in Mount Mary, Illinois. The opening concert had a huge crowd of nearly 4000 people. Post the expansion of the clubhouse, the shell was moved to its present location in 1962. The park is home to an assortment of recreational activities inclusive of a swimming pool, picnic area, sand volleyball, baseball and softball fields, and a playground.
Yerkes Observatory is a facility built for the Department of astronomy and astrophysics in Chicago University. The observatory is known to be the base of several ground breaking discoveries and theories in the field of astronomy and astrophysics. Additionally, many topics of current research in this field have been sparked off through the findings in this observatory. The facility houses a few state-of-the-art equipment as well as the world's largest refracting telescope. Also having a collection of over 150,000 photographic plates, Yerkes Observatory can justifiably be referred to as the foundation of modern astronomy.
Established in 1948, Rockford Speedway is one of the longest running sports venues in Northern Illinois. This 0.250-mile (0.400-kilometer) asphalt track is flanked by grandstands on either side and plays host to local races as well as national-level competitions. Their annual trailer races are a big draw among racing enthusiasts. Other popular community events taking place here include circuses, concerts, automobile shows, sales and fundraisers.
