    »Cafe Red Onion

The strip center location with its orderly interior reminiscent of a cafeteria, may not sound appealing, but the food is excellent. It is the perfect dining spot for a boisterous family outing and those more concerned with quality than atmosphere have made it a regular dining spot. Pricing is extremely modest and there is plenty of the complimentary, spicy pineapple salsa to go around. Be sure to sample a glass of the South American house wine along with your choice of South or Central American entrees.

    »Hartz Chicken Buffet

The skin on Hartz' fried chicken shatters on impact then dissolves on contact with every bite. And whatever they marinate the meat in must be the secret to keeping it moist and oh-so-tender. The meal deals come with their famous yeast rolls and a choice of two sides-including such southern classics like fried okra, pinto beans and rice, and even liver and gizzards. Don't worry-they also have the standards of creamy cole slaw, mashed potatoes, and corn too. It's fast, easy and delicious. And the good news is that there is more than one location to get that southern-fried chicken craving satisfied! - JoAnn Takasaki

    »C & S Chinese Cafe

The C & S Chinese Cafe is typical of strip shopping center restaurants; commonly comfortable and neat without many frills. What is special is the quality dishes leaving the C & S kitchen. You will find the Chef's sauces distinctive and nearly everything on the menu delectable.

    »Thu Thu Restaurant

This neighborhood restaurant in a tiny, seedy-looking strip center has some of the best Vietnamese in a town where Vietnamese restaurants are almost as common as taquerias. The restaurant itself, though nothing fancy, is sparkling clean. Their vermicelli and rice dishes are wonderful, but make sure to try some of the more exotic dishes like eel. Don't skip the crispy egg rolls with fresh lettuce, basil and cilantro to wrap it in—the fish sauce for dipping is savory and usually not too sweet. The $4 lunch special draws a crowd. For those not as adventurous, there are Chinese options as well. - JoAnn Takasaki

    »Otilia's Mexican Restaurant

Located in a former fast-food drive-in, the interior and exterior decor leaves a lot to be desired. The good news is, you will not care once you have sampled the food. It is the perfect setting for families and those who are more concerned with good food than atmosphere. This is the place for authentic mole, gorditas and daily specials that will make your mouth water. Several bottled beers are available, but the restaurant does not have a full bar.

    »Patisserie Descours

This casual bakery does not offer a lot of atmosphere, but the gourmet food is excellent. The limited seating area is quickly filled during breakfast and lunch hours, and those who cannot find a seat simply order to go. Try any number of French-oriented specialties for a taste sensation that is out of this world. The most beautiful wedding cakes can also be found here, and the petits fours and fancy desserts are as good (if not better) than those found on dessert carts at many fine restaurants in the Houston area. »Doyle's of Oak Forest

The decor in Doyle's of Oak Forest is modest and casual with the feel of a German Hill Country cafe. Families particularly enjoy the comfortable atmosphere and the "home-cooking" focus of the menu. New pasta dishes are creating quite a stir, and the traditional lasagna and pizzas are as popular as ever. Every order is accompanied with baskets of garlic bread laden with butter. »Seoul Garden

Just blocks off IH-10, there's a place where the bul go gi sizzles, the kim chee ripens, and the Seoul-search ends. The non-descript, slightly shady-looking strip mall exterior is forgotten once past the double doors and over the ornate red bridge into the dining area. Typical of Korean restaurants, there's a grill in the center of the table to cook your own BBQ. And naturally, they'll immediately provide 15 different pickled and fermented sides to go with. Up and down Long Point are more hole-in-wall options, but this one is great with a group. - JoAnn Takasaki
