»Second No Boundary Thinking Conference: Nbt and Big Data

April 12, 2015 12:00 PM

Please plan to join us for the second national No Boundary Thinking Conference April 12-14, 2015, Embassy Suites Little Rock, Arkansas. This workshop is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Arkansas State University and the University of Arkansas. More details will be forthcoming here. Participation can be through attendance, paper presentations and poster presentations. No Boundary Thinking (NBT) is a new approach to defining problems and research questions in areas where interdisciplinary or big data approaches do not work well. An NBT approach to problem definition includes an understanding of the roles of data, a broad range of disciplinary methodologies, and infrastructure for computational science while (not after) a research problem is being defined. By focusing initially on the many aspects of specifying a problem, NBT inspires scientists to reach beyond their comfort zones, attract the needed variety of researchers and resources, and ultimately develop effective solutions. We welcome an open discussion with many points of view about data science, big data methodologies and their relationship to a No Boundary Thinking approach to defining research problems. This discussion will further our shared understanding of NBT as a research methodology. How you can get involved: This conference, in particular, will explore the implications of No Boundary Thinking in bioinformatics as a data-driven research enterprise. Correlations discovered in the analysis of large data sets are subject to interpretation as hypotheses, and these interpretations are based on a research teams intellectual grounding. No Boundary Thinking brings a new approach to interpretation in data-driven research by encouraging and fostering the application of many disciplinary world views at the stage of defining the problem or hypothesis to be tested by the experimental method. An NBT approach to defining problems based on multiple disciplinary lenses requires that researchers have training and dispositions that are broader than their own individual specialties. A big part of defining and leveraging NBT in practice focuses on opening up education and training programs to ground emerging researchers in multiple disciplinary world views without sacrificing the value of disciplinary specialization. This conference is open to papers, workshops and posters on the following and related areas: * novel approaches in interdisciplinary research * data-driven science as a research paradigm * the philosophy of science and the scientific method in medical and life sciences research * bridging the gap between systems biology and bioinformatics * graduate training in bioinformatics for students in cell biology * preparing undergraduates to fill technical roles in bioinformatics * If you would like to participate in the upcoming conference or be added to the No Boundary Thinking mailing list  please send an email to dfmcmull@uark.edu.
