»Haddon Hall

March 06, 2015 8:00 PM

The romantic legend of Dorothy Vernon, the daughter of a wealthy British landowner, who scandalized society by eloping with her true love instead of submitting to an arranged marriage, comes to the stage courtesy of the Victorian Lyric Opera Company. Still a major British tourist attraction today, the English country house known as Haddon Hall provides the proper setting for this 19th-century social satire, written by composer Arthur Sullivan shortly after his famed 1889 breakup with librettist W.S. Gilbert. A talented cast of more than 30 is set to appear in this new production at Rockville's F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre. The company will also host a community outreach matinee, featuring a craft activity for kids, backstage tours and more.

»Antigone Rising

March 06, 2015 8:00 PM

Brought together by the infectious energy of New York City's Greenwich Village, Antigone Rising was formed in 1993 by sisters Cathy and Kristen Henderson. Antigone Rising's music takes many of the whimsical and nostalgic themes and tropes from country music, but foregrounds more complex guitar arrangements that owe more to 70s era rock and roll than contemporary country music. Despite a rotating cast of band members, Antigone Rising continues to release music in the 21st century as well as tour.

»Jesus Christ Superstar

March 06, 2015 8:00 PM

Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Jesus Christ Superstar" changed the face of musical theater when it debuted on Broadway in 1971. A rock 'n' roll retelling of the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth -- told through the eyes of his betrayer, Judas Iscariot -- "Jesus Christ Superstar"'s chart-topping songs such as "Everything's Alright," "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and the high-octane title song dramatically highlight the struggles of Jesus's final days. See the ground-breaking rock opera that reinvented musical theater when you delve into one of the greatest stories of all time in this production by the Prince William Little Theatre, which will bring Jesus Christ right into the modern day, and will include the resurrection.

»Danu

March 06, 2015 8:00 PM

Southeastern Ireland's Danú is a traditional Irish band that was founded in 1995. Benny McCarthy, Donal Clancy, Donnchadh Gough and Daire Bracken met in 1994, when they were invited to play together at the Lorient Inter-celtic Festival in France, after which a friend named the group Danu, after the Celtic Goddess. Danú was invited to return to the festival the following year, by which time the brothers Tom and Eamonn Doorley joined the group. With its 1997 self-titled debut album it followed with a tour of the US, the band began reaching new audiences and its reputation as an energetic group with a commitment to traditional Irish music grew by leaps and bounds. The band's 2000 album Think Before You Think was voted Best Overall Traditional Act by the Dublin-based publication Irish Music. Though the band has gone through number of lineup changes, the most drastic of which being the addition of Muirean Nic Amhlaoibh as lead singer, Danú has released a total of nine albums as of 2010 and has played a number of high profile events, including the 2005 Irish governments trade delegation in India.
