Initially starting Mushroomhead as a side project to their others bands and donning masks and stage names to disassociate themselves from these bands, the members of the Cleveland-based collective quickly became known for these costumes. Playing its first two shows in 1993 with popular thrash metal band GWAR--a group also known for over-the-top costuming--Mushroomhead immediately developed a cult following and has maintained this fan base ever since. With it's heavy industrial metal and thematically dark stage show, Mushroomhead has been featured on multiple horror film soundtracks and been included in tours like Ozzfest and Mayhem Festival.

»Black Label Society

April 16, 2015 7:00 PM

What originally started as a creative outlet for guitarist Zakk Wylde in 1998--when he wasn't playing with Ozzy Osbourne--has turned into a serious metal musical endeavor that has consumed the lives of all of its members. Dubbed the Black Label Society, the ferocity that comes through the band's music is consuming and nearly impossible to turn your back on. And even though the rag-tag cast of musicians that comprise the outfit is a swarthy lot, they're more than capable of serving up crunchy metal jams.

Psychostick is a hardcore band from Tempe, Arizona that has set itself apart from the crowded heavy metal scene with its extreme use of humor. With a sound it describes as "humorcore," the band packs its music with comical, sometimes nonsensical, lyrics about anything and everything including love and depression (one of its songs is called "Prozak Milkshake"). Starting with its 2006 debut album We Couldn't think of a Title, humor has dominated the band's music, particularly during live shows when it uses prop comedy to enhance the live experience. But when it comes to instrumentation, the band takes its music very seriously. Psychostick shtick manages to work because it doesn't carelessly throw songs and silly words together--instead offering carefully crafted ridiculousness.

»That 1 Guy

April 23, 2015 7:30 PM

Born Mike Silverman, That 1 Guy is a singer/songwriter and one-man band who is known for using homemade instruments. A classically trained double bass player, Silverman began his career in music as a progressive jazz player in the 1990s. As he developed a reputation as a one-man rhythm section, he began devising his own instrument that would give him the range to create his own sound. The result was the Magic Pipe, an over seven foot tall structure of plumbing pipes, bass strings and electronics, which allowed him to go solo and adopt the moniker That 1 Guy. He released his debut album in 2009, titled Let's Hear That 1 Guy, and steadily broadened his repertoire of strange instruments.
