Spread across 6,400 acres (26 square kilometers), the Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center offers a wide range of activities. Visitors can explore the scenic landscape or enjoy activities like hunting, fishing, horseback riding and so forth. The on-site Conference Center and Banquet Hall can be rented for private and corporate events.
A short 50-mile (80-kilometer) trip heading south from Atlanta will bring you to one of Georgia's most peaceful state parks. Sprewell Bluff Park is located on Highway 74, about ten miles (16 kilometers) west of the small village of Thomaston. The enormous park features ten picnic sites, a scenic lake that allows private crafts, hiking trails, and several streams. Fishing is permitted in the park's lake and streams in season. It opens daily at 7a.
Jessie E. Tanner Junior Park, on Carl Vinson Parkway, lies just a few steps away from Houston County Office. The neighborhood park offers a volley of activities that you can enjoy with family and friends. It features essential amenities such as picnic spots, bathrooms and much more, Tanner Park also has provisions for various team sports such as tennis, volleyball, basketball, baseball and soccer, to name a few.
Just a short drive south from Atlanta, the Champions Club at River's Edge is a perfectly manicured par-71 championship course with extremely tight fairways and fast bent-grass greens. This popular suburban course is well known and often busy, so call ahead for tee times. Carts are included in green fees, and rental clubs are available, as is a driving range. Tee times are accepted five days in advance.
The Landings Golf Club is a spectacular facility. The terrain here is impeccable and makes a perfect setting for golf enthusiasts, professionals and amateurs alike.
Lake Spivey is just a short drive from downtown and offers great golf at a reasonable price. The club has well-maintained golf courses that offer challenges to a professional as well as amateurs. The club has a driving range and fully stocked pro shop. After a tiring game, one can retire with a sumptuous meal served in their restaurant.
Clayton County International Park, located 20 minutes to the south of Atlanta, was constructed for the beach volleyball competition of the 1996 Olympic Games, and now serves as one of Atlanta's most complete water parks. In addition to a 6200 capacity volleyball stadium and 13 courts, the park offers a beach on its six-acre (2.5 hectare) lake, several water slides, and a pool for small children. Miniature golf, basketball, softball, hiking and fishing are also offered. Check the website for varying schedule of operations.
The 18-hole course at the Links Club offers a challenging round of golf on a course designed to resemble the coastal links of the British Isles. The fairways are hilly and undulating, and the greens are surprisingly quick. Water comes into play on several of the holes in the form of strategically-placed ponds.
Opened in 1988, the Braelinn Golf Club offers an 18-hole course. It's a perfect spot to improve your skills, with a driving range, practice area and two full-time golf instructors. Plus, you can enjoy tennis and swimming or a meal at the clubhouse when you need a break from golfing. Note that the facility is closed on Wednesdays.
Just 17 miles (27 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta, this 617-acre (250-hectare) park offers a variety of outdoor activities. Explore the natural splendor on any of the park's trails, or stop by on the weekend for a guided hike to the top of the Panola Mountain. Hikers will enjoy the many species of flora and fauna that abound here, as well as the rock formations along the face of the 940-foot (286-meter) mountain itself. Located 30 minutes southwest of the city, this amusement park is open on weekends. Although there's plenty of fun for adults, the park is geared toward kids, with bumper boats, batting cages, laser tag, and three go-cart tracks. A miniature golf course, video arcade, and play maze are also available. Bulk tickets can be purchased 200 at a time since they are the cheapest. There are also occasional "armband specials" that offer unlimited access to certain rides for a certain price.
