Set in the historic, Mission-style Smiley Building, the Smiley Theater is touted to be the biggest of its kind in the city. A trip to Durango is incomplete without a visit to Henry Strater Theatre. The theater has entertained locals and tourists for over 40 years with its brilliant shows and performances. Before turning into this magnificent structure, the 'theater' was just a simple entertainment corner set up in a garage. A change was desperately required and the picture of a gorgeous theater began to shape up. The picture took life in 1961 and went on to become an icon of the city. Located in downtown Durango, the Animas City Theatre was launched by Michele and Chris Redding. This space occupies what was formerly the Abbey Theatre and is one of the top venues in Southwest Colorado. It features a state-of-the-art sound and light system, and houses a digital movie screen showcasing the latest blockbusters. The ACT also plays host to an array of concerts and live entertainment by regional and international artists.
