    »Sweetwater Creek State Park

    This 2549-acre (1031.54-hectare) park is particularly noted for its populations of birds, butterflies and wildflowers. Hiking trails are laid throughout, and pass such interesting spots as the George Sparks Reservoir and the ruins of a cotton factory destroyed during the Civil War. Canoe and fishing boat rentals are available, as well as a bait shack, restrooms, and historical information. Take home some souvenirs from the gift shop, located at the visitors center.

    »Dogwood Golf & Country Club

    Centered around a large, convoluted lake, the course at Dogwood presents a barrage of water hazards sufficient to test the mettle of any serious golfer. The tight, par-72 bentgrass course negotiates a twisting path of doglegs and double-backs along its 6501-yard (5944-meter) length. Green fees, including cart, is USD45 on weekdays. A driving range, small pro shop and rental clubs are also available. Dogwood is located about 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta, and is open to the public.

    »Twin Lakes Golf Club

    Set in the rolling countryside of Fayette County, it's hard to believe this bucolic facility lies only about 15 minutes south of Hartsfield International Airport. The location is so convenient, business travelers have actually been known to slip in a quick round at this par-3 course during layovers. The course plays 1150 yards (1052 meters) with narrow fairways that open onto wide approach areas and tricky greens. Carts and clubs are available for rent, as well as a driving range for quick warm-ups.

    »Silver Comet Trail

    Years ago, the Silver Comet Rail Line took passengers back and forth between Atlanta and Birmingham, Alabama. Now, however, the abandoned line has carried passengers only on foot or on bicycle. This paved trail runs for 13 miles (21 kilometers) through Cobb County and continues into Paulding and Polk Counties. When completed, the trail will extend the entire length of the Atlanta-Birmingham line. Pets are allowed if leashed. You can access this scenic trail at multiple locations; just call for directions.

    »Cochran Mill Park

    Waterfalls abound at this beautiful Atlanta park, where a variety of trails lead to many wonderful remote destinations. Trails range in length from one-third of a mile to a full mile, and none are strenuous. Some treks involve crossing creeks, however, so come prepared to get wet if you misstep. The Cochran Shoals Nature Center houses a number of wild animals, including a mountain lion. Take Highway 20 to Fairburn Road (exit 92) and turn left. Turn right at Cochran Mill Road (Highway 70). The road leads into the park.

    »Lost Mountain Park

    Located just north of Atlanta, this unique park is about as frequented as its clever name implies. The name, Lost Mountain Park, itself is derived from the peculiar way the mountain seems to disappear as visitors approach on foot. Utilized mostly by local fisherman, the park is thickly forested and features two serene lakes. Picnic facilities and hiking trails are provided. Maps are available at the visitors center, where rangers are always willing to point out the best fishing spots.

    This pleasant 18-hole, par 72 course is popular with mid-level players, and sits on the site of a Civil War battle. One of the area's most frequented public courses, weekends can get pretty busy, so reserved tee times are strongly recommended. The golf course is open daily from 7a.
