»Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives

April 18, 2015 8:00 PM

John Martin Stuart goes by his nickname Marty Stuart and is widely known for his blend of classic country and rockabilly music. Born in Philadelphia, Stuart developed a taste for country music that prompted him to teach himself how to play the guitar and mandolin. Before he was even a teenager, he was performing with the bluegrass band The Sullivans. After meeting Lester Flatt guitarist Roland White, Stuart was invited to be a permanent part of the band and played with it broke up in 1978. Stuart moved on to work with fiddler Vassar Clements, guitarist Doc Watson and perhaps most notably, he joined Johnny Cash's back up band in 1980. His initial solo albums With a Little Help From My Friends and Busy Bee Cafe, respectively from 1979 and 1982, were created strictly out of a bluegrass lens and never saw commercial success. Stuart left Johnny Cash's band in 1985 to seriously pursue a solo career. Signed to MCA Records, he released his first acclaimed album in 1989 titled Hillbilly Rock, which earned him praise for incorporating rockabilly with southern honky tonk sounds. Over the next two decades, Stuart recorded 14 studio albums, published photos and articles covering the country music scene, received his own country music television show and served on the board of the Country Music Foundation, submerging himself in everything country and solidifying his name as one of the most versatile musicians in the genre.

»Nicki Bluhm and The Gramblers - 3 Show Pass

April 18, 2015 8:30 PM

Nicki Bluhm was discovered serendipitously, when she happened to sing an impromptu blues cover at a party and was noticed by her now husband, producer and musician Tim Bluhm. The San Francisco-based songstress soon began recording her debut album with Tim Bluhm, and slowly recruited more members for her backing band, which became known as the Gramblers. Melding Memphis soul with classic country and crooning everything in her powerful, smoky voice, Nicki Bluhm has won over audiences across the country and with each new album continues to mature her sound.

»Rites Of Spring - Saturday Only

April 18, 2015 6:00 PM

Portugal. the Man is a perfect case study of how a band matures as it gets older. Formed in 2004, the band was extremely experimental sounding and tended to get carried away with excessive instrumental noodling that would often lead to nowhere in particular. After releasing a few albums and touring for a couple of years, the band toned things down and started making pop-friendly music that would entice new listeners instead of scaring them away. The band is based out of Portland, Oregon, and though it's not exactly part of the "mainstream," it still has strong ties to popular alternative rock scenes.

»Marathon Music Works + Exit/in Gift Certificates

April 18, 2015 10:00 AM

Exit is a regular series of plays put together by the Gruene Sosse Youth Theater Ensemble in Frankfurt-am-Main that explore the issues that affect Germany's youth culture. The plays not only give a chance for German teenagers and adolescents to experience theater that they can relate to, but it also gives them the opportunity to act and participate in the process of presenting theater to the public. Although the plays typically focus on some of the deeper issues that affect youth, such as divorcing parents, Exit is also sure to include some of the funner aspects of youth culture that can be especially educational and entertaining for adults as well.
