Aptly named, Hill City is located in the heart of the Black Hills mountain range. Though the region that Hill City would be established in saw the first human settlers as early as 7000 BCE, it was the booming mining industry, mainly tin and gold, in the late 19th Century that saw the beginnings of a proper town settlement. After the collapse of the mining industry, the town almost disappeared off the map. Today, the town is a hot-spot for tourism, and is close to places like Mount Rushmore, the Custer State Park and Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, as well as being the venue for several arts festivals.
