»Washita Battlefield National Historic Site

Located along the river Washita, the Washita Battlefield marks the site of a controversial moment in General George Custer's campaign against the Cheyenne tribe. After a war party of Chief Black Kettle's men attacked settlers upriver from their camp, a plan was launched to force the tribe into a subordinate position. General Custer devised a plan in which four columns of troops would commit a coordinated attack against the village, effectively freezing their chances at retaliation. In the ensuing conflict, Custer's troops held women and children hostage while killing several of the tribe's warriors. The bitter events at Washita ended up contributing to Custer's defeat at Little Bighorn.
