No, this place isn't connected to the hit Broadway Smokey Joe's Cafe revue, but it wouldn't be surprising if it was inspired by the pop culture behind it. While this bar cum entertainment venue offers superb live music performances and cheap drinks, it does pose as more of a dive bar rather than a sophisticated watering hole. This however has not deterred its patrons from being loyal, and its first-timers from visiting again. Smokey Joe's Cafe usually features blues, Americana, indie, bluegrass, jazz, jam band, country, rock, jazz, folk, funk, and acoustic music performances. And there's also a pool table, an outdoor seating area with a swing, and other past times that make Smokey Joe's Cafe the ideal place to chill out with buddies, or unwind at after a hard day at work. Call for event timings and additional information.
Portofino's is the essence of neighborhood dining. Everyone is treated like family, portions are generous, and everything on the menu is worth ordering. Meals begin with a salad that features a signature dressing whose recipe is a tightly held family secret (the wait staff doesn't even have a clue). The pizzas are made to order, with casually chopped rather than machine-sliced toppings. Feeling decadent? Enjoy an appetizer of clams casino followed by a veal entree. Italian chicken and beef dishes round out the fare, along with seafood selections as well.
Dim Sum is true to its name. It offers an authentic dim sum menu with all the trappings of a similar establishment in San Francisco or Hong Kong. Patrons gather around massive family-size tables as carts roll by with dumplings, rice, roast duck, sesame balls, and all the rest. Dim Sum's menu is divided into two sections: one half lists "Americanized" Chinese food, while the other lists Chinese Chinese food. The latter is where you will find beloved delicacies such as chicken feet and tripe. Be aware that for this authentic dim sum experience, the prices are a bit steeper than your run-of-the-mill takeout joint.
Set in an old house, LuLu offers a relaxed, but still food-oriented atmosphere for its patrons. It is small enough to be managed by its two owners, one of whom is an authentic Frenchman. The food is also influenced by European flavors and combinations, and ranges from simple sandwiches to complex and filling entrees. If you're looking for bistro cuisine in a cozy setting, this is the place for you.
The confluence of a posh and urban eatery with classic French undertones is what creates LULU. The restaurant offers eternal French delights to suit American tastes with their classic pomme frite, succeulent steaks, perfectly cooked calamari and much more. Decadent desserts also feature on the menu which will surely sizzle your taste buds. The decor of the place is as European as one would expect, with a dreamy and nonchalant aura about it. The bar also offers some good selections of French wines and spirits.
Common Market is a contemporary delicatessen located in Plaza Midwood. This place is great for breakfast, and caters to vegan, vegetarian and meat-loving visitors as well. On their menu are delicious deli classics like salads, soups and sandwiches. Sample an array of cheeses as well as Boar's Head meats. A person walking into Dish for the first time might get the agreeable impression that it's just another homey soul-food kitchen. The low prices for entrees and friendly service will add to that impression, but when the food shows up, Dish will reveal its true colors as an eclectic and creative spin on Southern dining. Of course, you might have picked that up just from reading the menu, and noticing that the Fried Potato Cakes are encrusted in Japanese bread crumbs, or that the Cajun Meatloaf moves from North Carolina to Louisiana. And with a full bar and late hours, Dish makes itself the place to go to anytime for a good meal.
Located in the historic area of Elizabeth, Kennedy's Premium Bar & Grill is a place with an upbeat groove. Kennedy's has a vibrant bar scene with cheap booze and good food, perfect for a hang out with friends and some cheerful fun. The generous deck with low hanging lights, hardwood floor and a huge shamrock remind patrons of legendary Irish drinking traditions. The service staff is incredibly good-natured and relaxed and well-versed in what customers want.
It may have a lengthy name, but it is directly proportionate to the menu at this joint! Meat is the most important ingredient on the carte du jour, and it ranges from rabbit to chicken to top sirloin—12 different varieties in all. The Brazilian seasonings are just right, not too tangy, not too spicy. What else? Banquet arrangements for about 20-50, parking and al fresco seating, plus a buffet menu! Reservations are strongly suggested.
For a change from the usual routine, head to Soul Gastrolounge. Specializing in sushi and tapas, it offers a wide mix of flavors for all taste-buds. The outdoor patio offers fresh air and greenery to enjoy meals. There are regular trivia nights and karaoke to add to the entertainment. Grilled chicken pasta and home-made pasta are the signature dishes of this place.
A slice of New Orleans has come all the way to North Carolina. But hey, so what if you don't have the Mardi Gras, you will be treated to live jazz every night of the week! The barbecue shrimp, Cajun popcorn, red beans and rice, crawfish scampi, all will make your tummy happy. By the way, it has been voted as the best Cajun restaurant in Charlotte.
