The catch phrase is "Carlsbad, California's Newest Playground". Strictly speaking, Carlsbad has been around for a long time, but it has not been promoted or discovered in the way that many residents rightly feel it deserves. With the Flower Fields and Legoland drawing international visitors, the already-charming town is spiffying itself up to be at its best. This local center provides abundant pamphlets, maps, hotel information, beach, surf and weather information in addition to an up-to-date events calendar.
This children's museum provides a vibrant, interactive, learning environment that invites children from ages two to twelve years to pretend, explore, and engage the mind, heart, and senses in joyful learning, with exhibits including the World of Sound, Creative Corner, Solar Energy, Toddler Corner, and Japanese Culture.

At the Buena Vista Audubon Society’s Nature Center, trained docents lead various nature walks and classes. They tailor many of their nature walks to elementary students, but they also have classes about birds of prey for older kids and high school students. For those who would like to get the most out of the Buena Vista Audubon Society, there are various hikes and day camps for kids. For those who want to enjoy the nature center’s facilities, it offers taxidermies of various birds, fish and other local wildlife. The Buena Vista Audobon Society’s nature center also consists of a collection of books, films, and CD’s, as well as a conference room for meetings. - Erick Pettersen

A 50-acre rainbow of blooming Ranunculus flowers thrill freeway passers. Because of the incredible flowering fields, Legoland chose to build near here. The season is short (approximately March through May) with the greatest display in early to mid-April at the Flower Field. Pathways take you up the gently sloping fields, where most people stand in silence, taking in the abundant flowers and gazing at the Carlsbad coastline. A large tent serves as the hospitality center gift shop offering a rich array of blooming plants to take home, souvenir cups, tote bags, clothing and packages of the Ranunculus corms to plant in your own garden.

On the north end, Carlsbad State Beach is the preferable location for surfers. In fact, this beach is often the choice for novice surfers. The surf is generally three to eight feet, with winds headed west to northwest. Meanwhile, further down the Coast Highway (just south of Palomar Airport Road), South Carlsbad State Beach spans quite a distance along the coastline. This beach is better suited for swimming than surfing. Furthermore, this spot is ideal for families, with plenty of space for children to play in the waves or the sand. Beachside camping is another unique activity that this beach offers.
