A city that was the former stronghold of the Cherokee Native American tribe, Canton has survived a brutal past to emerge an economically prominent city in the Cherokee County of Georgia. For hundreds of years, the Cherokee had inhabited the land that was to become Canton, but after the forced removal of the Native Americans in all of Georgia came about, the Cherokee were among those who were either slaughtered or driven away by the Federal Troops. After the Anglo-Americans took over the area, Canton was established as a city and county seat in 1834. Popular for the type of denim, called ‘Canton denim’, the city prospered into a manufacturing town, and the city is today among the fastest growing cities in the country.
