»Chinook Centre

From the outside, this enormous shopping center looks a bit like a giant spaceship. The Bay, Zellers and Sears are the major stops here, while The Gap, Eddie Bauer, Hallmark and The Sony Store are among some 150 other mall tenants. There are also dozens of services and a professional building at the heart of the mall. A massive new food court is the feature attraction of the reworked mall, which for years was in many ways two malls separated by an elevated parking garage.

»Heritage Park Historical Village

Heritage Park Historical Village, one of Canada's largest historical villages, is divided into a pioneer Northwest Mounted Police outpost and a Main Street from 1910. The latter has a working antique amusement park, with rides that are safe even for small children. Other attractions include a working full-scale locomotive thundering through the park, and on the nearby Glenmore Reservoir, a vintage double-decker stern wheeler ship that takes visitors on lake cruises. Shops and restaurants are plentiful in the park, including a turn-of-the-century bakery. All park staff work in costume and character. Entertaining events for the whole family are scheduled year-round, including September's Fall Fair. Check the website for a full list of events and detailed admission fees.

»North Glenmore Park

The south end of Crowchild Trail or 37th Street South West brings motorists and cyclists to the long stretch of grass and trees that make up this park along the raised north shore of the Glenmore Reservoir. From the high bluffs overlooking the backed-up waters of the Elbow River, visitors can look over the reservoir waters at small sailboats, kayaks and canoes. Looking west, visitors get an unobstructed view of the Canadian Rockies, over the brush and flats of the still-wild Weaselhead Natural Area. Public wash rooms and numerous parking areas are available. Within the park, the path is split into a paved walking path and a separate cycling/blading path. Paths encircle the reservoir, joining North Glenmore Park to South Glenmore Park.

»The Anglican Parish of Christ Church Calgary

The Christ Church in Calgary is from the Anglican branch of Christianity and one of the most active churches around. It pays special attention to training and encouraging those who would like to learn the nuances of bell ringing. Since time immemorial, the ringing of bells have signified something poignant like death, end of war or a New Year. Children and toddlers have a special place here with a nursery to take care of them while their parents are at Sunday Service. Various spaces within the church enclave can also be hired for non parish events. Check the website for details.

»South Glenmore Park

South Glenmore Park is an unspoiled park and grassland that line's the south side of Calgary's Glenmore Reservoir. Tennis courts and a playground are available, too, but the primary attraction is the set of docks of a small, city-run sailing school. On weekends, landlubbers can rent sail boats and take to the water. Walking or cycling leads into the largely-wild Weaselhead Natural Area, where lucky visitors can catch a glimpse at such wildlife as beavers, deer and various breeds of waterfowl. South Glenmore Park is truly worth a visit!

»Device To Root Out Evil

A striking creation by celebrated artist Dennis Oppenheim, the Device To Root Out Evil has garnered equal amount of praises and criticism. But whether you love it or hate it, you just cannot ignore it. Initially exhibited in La Biennale, Venice, the structure was later parked at a public park in Vancouver from where it was unanimously voted out because it hurt many religious sentiments. This inverted church with its steeple burried into the ground is now a property of the Glenbow Museum and they proudly exhibit it at 24th Avenue South East. Open for pictures throughout the day at no fee, Device To Root Out Evil looks stunning at night when it is illuminated with idiosyncratic red lights. And do not be alarmed by its name, it is absolutely pleasant to be around this distinctive piece of art.
