»Agent Orange With Special Guest In The Whale

April 29, 2015 9:00 PM

A reference to its hometown of Orange County and the toxic herbicide used in the Vietnam War, Agent Orange is a trio noted as one of the first bands to fuse punk rock and surf music. Formed in 1979, the band has gone through many lineups, but has consistently remained active and stuck by its punk morals, refusing to sell out like many of its contemporaries. Though the band members claimed they didn't skate, Agent Orange was highly influential in the development of skate punk and its songs are often used in skateboard video games today. Because Agent Oranges appeals to such a broad variety of punk fans, the group has a devout audience around the world that continues to grow.

»Computer Simulation Of Gas Turbines

April 30, 2015 8:00 AM

DescriptionThis seminar provides indepth understanding of computer simulation of gas turbines under steady-state and transient conditions. The selection considerations and applications of co-generation and combined cycles are also covered in this seminar. The analysis performed by gas turbine simulators provides the following benefits:1- Allow the operator to extend the gas turbine operating period by avoiding unnecessary outages and maintenance activities.2- Determination of essential gas turbine maintenance activities to reduce theduration of the outage. The simulation program is capable of simulating the following parameters to determine their effects on gas turbine performance, turbine creep life, environmental emissions, gas turbine life cycle cost, revenue, and profitability: variations in ambient temperature and pressure, inlet and exhaust losses, engine deterioration, different faults, power augmentation methods including peak mode, and water injection, control system performance (including proportional offset, integral windup, and trips), variations in the fuel type (natural gas, diesel, etc), variations in maintenance techniques and frequency, variations in many key parameters. The simulation program is also capable of trending the following:1- Many gas turbine key parameters such as exhaust gas temperature, speed, etc.2- Compressor characteristics, and its operating point during engine transients. These trends can also be provided as bar charts. The simulated data can be exported to other Window packages such as Excel spreadsheets, etc. Many simulation exercises are included to describe how the simulation program should be used for different scenariosincluding co-generation and combined cycle plants.Delegates are also encouraged to bring the operational data of their gas turbines.

»Building A Community Response To Climate Change

April 30, 2015 6:00 PM

Organizations such as the World Bank, International Energy Agency, Pricewaterhouse Cooper, and the UN all warn that we have a limited time (about 15 years) to transition to a zero-carbon society if we are to avoid serious climate change and minimize its impacts on communities (climate refugees, climate destabilization, growing food scarcity, health, extinction of species). But there is much that citizens, communities, and governments can do to avoid the worst impacts and to build resilience. The workshop will highlight the actions that we can take to rapidly transition from our present energy and economy to a society that works with and respects nature as a partner.      LEARNING OUTCOMES:    To provide an provide an overview of unique social issues (such as climate refugees, food scarcity, deterioration of mental and physical health) communities, in the near future, may be faced with as a consequence of climate change Discuss what that citizens, communities, and governments can do to avoid the worst impacts and to build resilience. Facilitator -  Dr. Mishka Lysack PhD (McGill) is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary, and teaches social work theory and practice, environmental issues, and family therapy. He is also the coordinator of the ongoing series: Teach-ins on the Environment. This seminar is approved for ACSW Category A credits by the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary. Sign in at the start and sign out at the end of presentation is required to be eligible for ACSW Category A credits. No partial credits are available.
