Created in the year 1957, the Hellenic Community of Calgary is one built of a sense of deep culture and faith. The community aims not only at preserving culture by educating members of its community but opening it up to all people. The Community has built and maintained its own church, school, and community hall/center. The hall is famously known as being the venue for the annual Greek festival organized by the community. Located on the banks of the Bow River, this beautiful and serene monastery is the residence of several monks and the spiritual center of Calgary's orthodox Buddhist community. The Avatamsaka Buddhist Monastery is a branch of the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association, and hosts daily sutra recitations, lectures and meditation sessions. Education is a key focus of this association, and free lectures are offered with translations into Cantonese, Vietnamese and English where necessary.
