It is easy to forget you are in the middle of Calgary's bustling Chinatown while dining in this Vietnamese eatery. The subdued colors and lighting make for a quiet and enjoyable meal. Saigon Y2K offers traditional Vietnamese dishes such as deep fried quails and spring rolls, egg noodle soups, rice bowls, stir fried noodles and vermicelli selections. This friendly eatery is bright with quirky grape-shaped light fixtures, ubiquitous checkered tablecloths and a young, attractive staff. The cuisine might be best described as 'fun Italian' that features regular favorites such as Lasagna and pizzas. Their selection of pastas is lengthy and servings are enormous. While Italian-food purists might scoff at the less traditional dishes, the grill offers enjoyable and affordable meals in a casual atmosphere.
The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology Chef School (SAIT) operates the Highwood Restaurant, using it to train its students. A five-course meal complete with appetizer, entree, dessert and drinks is immaculately presented in a luxurious banquet hall. The gourmet cuisine served here is some of the finest in town, and is set at a price no other restaurant of its caliber can touch. There are three meal choices offered daily, along with a full selection of wines. In order to get a table, you must book at least a week in advance, because seats are in high demand.
Small and intimate, the Lazy Loaf and Kettle is actually a two-in-one facility. One side is an old-fashioned store that sells baked goods made from scratch; the other side is a cozy cafe bar, where you can enjoy an intimate meal at tables for two or four. In addition to an excellent assortment (and generous portions) of soups, baked goods and desserts at excellent prices. This spot is so child-friendly, it maintains a playroom for children.
For some of the most delicious and best-priced pasta in town, head to La Viena. On Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, you can order their delicious “pasta extravaganza”. Quiet and intimate, it attracts both a family and business clientèle. It seats approximately 44 people, and the fresh flowers and red-checkered tablecloths add a touch of Italy. They specialize in Italian food and also offer home-made pizza. Other entrées include chicken, veal and seafood. They have a large wine menu to choose from and reservations are recommended.
For those who like their treats in the mornings or late evenings, tap into more than seventy-two ice cream flavors at the Amato Gelato Cafe. This Kensington Italian ice cream and coffee shop is busy scooping throughout the week and into the weekends. They’ve got icy treats like mango, vanilla bean and even hedgehog!
