The décor is dominated by immense columns and high windows; everything is giant here, including the sumptuous chairs. The service is exemplary, and the wine list extensive and expensive.

»Da Emma

One of Montreal's best known Italian restaurants, Da Emma is actually a transplant from Little Italy to Old Montreal; the tradition of fine cuisine hasn't suffered, even if the current setting is a former prison! It is run with a flair for the dramatic and an obvious love of food. In the Roman tradition, the menu eschews faddish components and sticks to the basics: classics like mozzarella salad and house antipasti, followed by meat-intensive pastas and other main courses. The terrace is wonderful in summer.

»Bistro brasserie - Les soeurs grises

Quirky, trendy and full of life, the Bistro brasserie - Les soeurs grises, is a trendy microbrewery and bistro that is known for their excellent selection of in-house craft beers and imported beers. Built at a site that was once occupied by Les soeurs grises or the Grey Nuns founded by Marguerite d'Youville, the bistro has incorporated in to its otherwise contemporary decor, pieces of furniture that originally belonged to the nuns, including some of the light fixtures that have been crafted from swings that were once used by the orphans who were cared for by the nuns. Their food menu is a perfect complement to the distinctive taste of their beers. Although not extensive, dishes like the grilled cheese with chorizo and fig jam, brisket, smoked pork sandwich and cajun chicken sandwich form a menu that is packed with flavor.

This legendary tavern's original clientele was made up of Lachine dockworkers, and the kitchen still caters to carnivores with large appetites. The diverse clientele, seemingly endless tables, charming summer terrace and ruthlessly efficient service make this a consistent favorite. The justifiably renowned roast beef is prepared according to a secret family recipe and served in sizes ranging from six ounces to a ponderous 20 ounces. Other notables include an enormous platter of beef ribs reminiscent of the Flintstones. The grilled salmon is a rare lighter entry.

A true feast for Indian food lovers, Mirchi offers everything from the classic butter chicken and achari paneer, to more creative dishes such as the flavorful pathia lamb with coconut and coriander, as well as no less than seven types of naan bread.
