In the decades following her debut on the scene in 1956, American singer Aretha Franklin has more than proven herself as a quintessentially iconic individual who has more than lived up to her nickname as "The Queen of Soul." With a powerful and empowered vocal approach, Franklin defined and asserted herself at a time in music when it was difficult for African American women to do so. True to her character, the booming voice never seems to relent, helping Franklin continue to impress individuals who are lucky enough to catch the diva in action.
West Virginia University is a public land grant research university located in the rural setting of Morgantown, West Virginia. Having distinguished itself with a forward-thinking academic system since its inception in 1867, the school's sports teams--the Mountaineers--have also done much to set it apart and provide it with therecognitionand respect it deserves. The teams compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and have been part of the Big 12 since joining in 2012.
Massachusetts born singer/songwriter James Taylor basically wrote the book on soft rock. At 16, Taylor dropped out of high school, moved to New York, formed a band called Flying Machine and subsequently got sucked into the city's sex, drugs and rock n' roll scene of the 1960s. Taylor quickly developed a severe heroin addiction, forcing him eventually to check into rehab. After recovering from this addiction in Los Angeles, Taylor forged his distinct sound marked by his gentle voice and mellow acoustic guitar. Though some criticize Taylor for being a bit too lurid, there is no denying the exceptional songs that he wrote during his heyday in the 1970s, nor the influence he has had and will have on sensitive singer/songwriters for decades to come.
