National Museum of Roller Skating enlightens visitors on the history of this sport and the accessory, roller skates. Located right outside the Haymarket in the Mission Arts Building along with a number of artist studios, this small gallery is reached by crossing a hidden, verdant courtyard that in itself makes the trip worthwhile. Paintings, sculptures and other works of art by the 30 or so artists who collectively operate the gallery are shown as well as works by visiting artists. While exhibits rarely follow a central theme, works shown here are usually contemporary with a whimsical bent. Exhibitions usually change on a monthly basis.

»Lincoln Children's Museum

This downtown children's museum is a kid's dream come true. Most of the exhibits are built to allow children to play at doing the sort of things that adults do every day. Kids can pretend to shop at the grocery store, go to the bank or be a radio DJ. In addition to these every day activities, there is a lunar lander exhibit and various interactive high-tech areas. If your children are 12 or older, you can drop them off and do some downtown shopping. Kids younger than 12 must be supervised. Admission to the museum is $3 per person.

»Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery

Located on the University of Nebraska campus, the elegantly beautiful building that houses this world-class Modern American Art museum is constructed of Italian travertine marble and is worth seeing in its own right. The interior of the 1963 building features a naturally lit, spacious and sparsely decorated central hall surrounded by the three wings where the art is displayed. The museum's permanent collection includes representative works by important American artists such as Hopper, O'Keefe, Rothko and Warhol, among others. Two galleries of temporary exhibits are changed monthly. The campus-wide sculpture garden also features important works by America's most prominent sculptors. Admission to the museum is free and there is a small gift shop selling cards, books and posters.
