One of the most recognizable faces and voices in entertainment, Dave Chappelle is a stand-up comedian and actor who got his start on the stand-up comedy circuit in New York City. Despite getting booed off stage during his first performance at the legendary Apollo Theater's amateur night, he quickly rose to the occasion and made a name for himself among the hoards of aspiring entertainers in New York. He landed his first acting role in Mel Brooks' 1993 filmRobin Hood: Men in Tights, before developing a number of television pilots that were never picked up by any networks throughout the 1990s. After earning his first hour long comedy special on HBO Dave Chappelle: Killin' Them Softly, in 2000, his satirical brand of comedy began to catch on. His own sketch comedy show Chappelle's Show, debut in 2003 and quickly collected a well-earned share of commercial and critical accolades, as well as controversy for its razor sharp critique of pop culture, politics, racial stereotypes and the overall American way of life. In 2005, unhappy with the direction of his show, Chappelle abruptly departed for South Africa, where he stayed for a month before returning with surprise stand-up shows in Los Angeles. LeavingChappelle's Show behind him, he continues to perform stand-up to his own standards.
